Independent Consultant, April 1997 to Present

Clients include FPL Energy, Inc., Two-Phase Engineering and Research, Inc, Wabuska Geothermal, Walsh Construction, Amedee Geothermal Venture 1, Hart Energy International, University of Nevada, and BAC Corrosion Control, Ltd. 

Provided technical evaluation of combustion turbines and EPC contractors for Hart Energy, International. Services provided to Two-Phase Engineering include a technical review of available backpressure and total flow geothermal steam turbine technology. 

Wabuska Geothermal tasks include conversion of Organic Rankine Cycle turbines from fluorocarbon to iso-pentane working fluid, supervision of submersible production pump installation and plant optimization. 

Provided engineering to Walsh Construction, Inc., at the UCSF Medical Center Central Utilities Plant combined cycle cogeneration installation to resolve NOx system control problems. Engineering was also provided to Amedee Geothermal Venture 1 to resolve turbine seal and control system problems.
Evaluated pump and pipeline performance for Caithness Energy LLC's 60MW Dixie Valley, NV geothermal project.

Performed Due Diligence reporting for Precursor Systems, Inc. 

Evaluated technical aspects of numerous proposed peaking plants for Hart Energy, International, Inc.

Managed a plant betterment program for Jamaica Private Power Co. Ltd., at their 60 MW slow speed Diesel/Steam Turbine combined cycle plant at Kingston, Jamaica. The scope of work included improvements to O&M Procedures, modifications to the boiler level control system, pipe support improvements, relief valve system and oily water separation system.

Oxbow Power Services, Inc., Project Engineer, July 1991 to April 1997

Project Engineer for Mindanao I Geothermal Project, Philippines. 

Responsibilities include initial proposal preparation, cost estimating, bid document and specification writing, coordination of engineering and procurement, construction and startup support, and coordination of performance testing for 50 MW geothermal steam turbine project.

Plant Engineer for two geothermal power plants operated by Oxbow and provided engineering support for a 50 MW combined cycle gas turbine/steam plant at North Tonowanda, N.Y., and the 200 MW gas fired Sun Peak plant at Las Vegas, NV. 

Managed technical review and optimization analysis of the Dixie Valley, Nevada, brine gathering system and steam jet ejector system, resulting in 40,000 lb/hr steam savings. 

Designed and supervised installation of successful steam scrubbing system at Dixie Valley plant. Participated in planning and execution of four scheduled major plant overhauls. 

Coordinated fast track repair of 230kV transmission line damaged by aircraft collision.

Worked closely with plant managers and maintenance supervisors to create and maintain plant betterment and predictive maintenance programs to optimize performance of rotating machinery. 

Redesigned two-phase gathering system at Beowawe Geothermal plant to minimize pressure loss, resulting in significant production increase. 

Provided technical support for wind energy development efforts.  

Provided ongoing technical support as a member of successful Oxbow Business Development Team.

U.S. Energy Corporation, Geothermal Operations Manager, August 1989 to June 1991

Managed all operations and maintenance functions for the Amedee Geothermal Venture 1 Organic Rankine cycle project near Wendel, CA. 

Responsibilities include developing effective operations and maintenance procedures, rewriting Operation and Maintenance Manual, operator recruiting and training. Other tasks included troubleshooting rotating machinery problems, scheduling and supervising major repairs and modifications to plant capital equipment, including production pumps, and optimizing plant power output.

Independent Consultant, July 1988 to July 1989

Clients included Oxbow Power Services, Wabuska Geothermal, U.S. Energy Corporation, WRMS Engineering, Instrument Testing and Calibration, Inc., and Kappes Cassiday and Associates. 

Responsibilities for Oxbow included management of plant betterment program, design and installation of solar-powered remote pipeline instrumentation system and engineering support for plant operations at Dixie Valley, Nevada 50 MW geothermal power plant. Also provided fast-track procurement and on-site field technical support to bring production well 77-13 on-line at Oxbow's Beowawe, Nevada power plant.

Services for Wabuska Geothermal, Yerington, Nevada included emergency control and rotating machinery troubleshooting and repair services for an Organic Rankine Cycle geothermal power plant. 

WRMS Scope of Work included start up assistance for 30 MW combined cycle plant at UC Berkeley.

Services provided to Instrument Testing and Calibration, Inc. Included start-up engineering at Ogden-Martin's 15 MW steam turbine solid waste-to-energy plant at Crow's Landing, CA. 

Worked on solutions to last minute design problems, including controls, instrumentation and piping. Coordinated purchasing, delivery and installation of components to implement design changes. Field calibration and programming of instruments and controllers. Also supervised start-up crew in acceptance testing of plant components.

Geothermal Development Associates, Mechanical Engineer, July 1987 to June 1988

Control system design, including instrumentation, control valve specifications and governor system for Organic Rankine cycle geothermal power plant.

Geothermal piping and heat exchanger system design for geothermally enhanced heap leach gold mine. Also participated in geothermal power plant feasibility study for Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Study included technical, environmental and economic feasibility.

Shearwater Engineering Co., Field Engineer,
June 1979 to April 1984

Designed and specified equipment for commercial and residential heating systems.

Ormat Energy Systems, Senior Field Engineer, September 1984 to April 1987

Accomplishments with aggressively expanding company with new and unproven product line included field troubleshooting and correcting of control, electrical, thermodynamic and rotating machinery problems. Worked as member of start-up engineering team on 4.2 MW binary cycle geothermal plant at Cove Fort, Utah. 

Other responsibilities included project and start-up engineering for Ormat installations at Wabuska, Nevada and start-up engineering on the first successful U.S. Solar Pond installation at El Paso, TX. Additional duties included project development and marketing.
